RE: AS400 vs Win2k

General All Releases All Platforms

I'm definitely not hardcore pro-Windows, but admin costs for installation/upgrading of hardware on Windows platforms these days are pretty trivial. As operating systems, Win2K and 2003 are incredibly solid and quick to configure. The security issues are a definite concern, but a good firewall brings that down to a reasonable level. It's also really, really hard to beat Windows when it comes to selection and price of supported, high-performing hardware.

If you're using Windows' OS-level mirroring/striping it gets a bit more involved, but if all you're doing is adding drive space to an array that should all be handled by your controller anyway, making administrative cost next-to-nothing. Plug it in, tell the array to rebuild itself using the new drive(s) in the background and forget about it.

Besides the various hardware, reliability and admin differences, there is one other thing to consider for a Domino platform: support. Domino is developed using Win32 and more heavily-tested on Win32 due to install base percentages. The notes.net cluster has more Windows machines in it than it does any other platform. Also, have a look at the fix list database by platform. Keep in mind that (1) virtually every Windows fix is going to appear for all the Windows OSes and (2) Windows has a server AND a client for it. In comparison there are a relatively high number of AS/400-specific fixes.
